Catastrophic engine failure is to be avoided at all costs. One of the reasons we are seeing this more and more relates to the extreme differential in fuel quality and the impact that High Sulphur Fuels can have on the valve and seat. High sulfur content in fuels at a high temperature can lead to acidic condensation. Perhaps your engine is showing early signs of hot corrosion that have introduced an engine combustion leak path. There are eight general types of corrosion, but hot corrosion is frequently the most severe for VSI’s and valve applications. The other two most commonly seen are intergranular corrosion and pitting corrosion. We’ve developed unique alloy solutions and provided engine design commentary to mitigate and, in most instances, eliminate corrosion risk, dramatically improving engine performance and valve seat durability.
